Coptic

I didn't know what Coptic was until I registered for it fall semester 2001. For the uninitiated, Coptic is the language of the Copts, who were the Egyptian Christians (and still are, for that matter). There are a number of different dialects; Sahidic, the one that was most prevalent for centuries, is the one I've studied. Coptic is the descendant of Middle Egyptian (hieroglyphs) and uses a modified Greek alphabet. It is rather fond of stringing vowels together, which takes a little while to get used to, but isn't too difficult.
